January 31, 2008

This woman from South Carolina apparently has no idea that Suzanne Malveaux (the interviewer) is African American.

    tHOUGHT Merchant,

I am ashamed to admit this – I have dialup. Yes, I’m in the 19th century, computer wise. So, all these wonderful videos you have embedded take for forever to play on my computer. That’s the reason I haven’t been leaving comments.

I saw this one, and I’m really glad someone got it on tape.

Unfortunately, I think this attitude is quite common among whites. There seems to be a tendency these days for whites to think blacks are either as prejudice as whites or in (as in this lady’s case) more prejudice than whites. It is a common frame of contemporary racism–the idea is that “blacks are racist because they are the ones who bring up race.” Of course, many whites are in total denial, and they say all kinds of racist things in private, while finding ways to use racial code words in public.

    This is true Rachel.

I’ll never forget the night I was drinking with some guys in the dorm while stationed at Charleston Air Force Base. There was a bunch of us, mostly white, and the only non-whites were myself, a latino guy, and a black guy.

As soon as the black guy left, and I mean literally as soon as he rounded the corner and was out of sight, a co-worker of mine looked around and brought up how another co-worker of ours, who was black, was offended when someone said “you people.” It was the same argument: the “you people” comment wasn’t meant to be racist, but because the black co-worker was being oversensitive he interpreted it as such.

The very next comment was from someone else who had an “entertaining” story about how his racist father likes to call his half-black grandson a piccaninny, which, being of mixed race myself, offended me deeply.

For the next 15 minutes I heard the most racist shit spew out of these peoples’ mouths, while the latino guy and myself just glanced at each other in discomfort, shock, and disgust at what we were hearing.

Finally, I couldn’t take it anymore, and decided to leave. I wonder what comments they made about latinos and asians after we left.

And to think… that entire conversation was started because of their perceived notion that “black people are too sensitive about racism.”

    Chris,
I think the conversation started because they were oversensitive to their own.

Any reporter can find anyone that believes anything and then record it and get on the air and try to insinuate that it is true. WHITE PEOPLE ARENT THE ONLY RACIST PEOPLE, i live in San Jose CA, and in my childhood I was the only white kid( I am half egyptian half german I look italian) on my heavily hispanic/Philipino street. “Cracker, honkey, guerro(weddo), white boy… ” I was jumped, in fights, everyday during elementary school, when i got to Jr. high I would have to run home because the wannabe gangbangers wanted to show how tough they were by beating on a white boy.
In high school i was jumped and stabbed by a vietnamese group on new years eve because of racial tensions in the area at the time.
So I have a chip on my shoulder, yet my fiancee today is 1st generation Salvadorian and I am loved and included into her immigrant family.

Also obama got 9/10 of the black vote in NC. lol

I used to work as a bar back at a casino, one night I was stocking the water bottles behind the bar and where it was located nobody in the bar room could see me. Well just so happened that that night everyone that was attending that bar was black. I heard the most racist shit about white people I ever heard in my life. everything from enslaving whites to killing us all off when the black man takes over etc. etc. So as you see it goes both ways blacks talk about whites behind whites backs to. What really bugs me is i came in and let them know i heard everything and they didn’t care didn’t think anything about it. And to know I had considered these people good friends. I guess it is ok to be racist when your black. If it had been the other way around you know everyone in that room would have been fired.

I guess it is ok for BLACKS to be racist, they were enslaved for so long and long abused…oh wait, that was their ancestors not them….get the racism card off the table, quit playing down the fact that blacks use it for everything in their lives whether it is to get a scholarship to college or get a job…. How is it that this goes unnoticed…oh because if a white were to stand up and speak the truth they would be called racist…. in truth though if you look at facts not assumptions the truth is right there… Blacks have an entire month to celebrate their race…whites not even a day (don’t go and say 4th of July like people have in the past, that is an AMERICA holiday). Blacks get a break on federal funding, whites do not…so on and so forth. So who plays the race card more? who is more racist? but if i say it I will be racist, if a black says it it is just speaking the truth, that is so hypocritical!!
